Partner Projects - Climate Changers

Kids thinking big about sustainability

Climate change is daunting. We’ve mostly agreed that it’s happening but it’s big and what can we do about it anyway? Hands on Art member Jaina Kalifa produced workshops at Milton State School with science educator Paul Brandon from Queensland Museum and artsworker Juliette Kalifa to teach kids about climate change and help them create artworks exploring possible solutions. Hands on Art contributed art materials and workshop assistant Nick Drake to help deliver the in-school workshops. The artworks will be exhibited at Queensland Museum South Bank from 20 August–11 September 2011 as part of National Science Week. The exhibition will also include a short documentary about the project, which is available below.

The Very Long Story

This workshop gives children the opportunity to work with artists and illustrators to produce a very long storybook. Children play with words, ideas, shapes and a variety of art materials to help them design an illustration based on a theme.

Artgarden

An Artgarden is a sustainable, evolving art form that doesn’t grow tired with time, but grows more beautiful. It is designed for creative play and as an outdoor environmental learning space.
Artgarden features:
• low cost to establish
• easy to maintain and expand according to needs
• native flora is used to provide bush tucker, and to attract native fauna
• the whole garden is seen as an evolving work of art, in which children are instrumental in the garden’s planning and growth
• it’s a garden designed to play and work in
• it allows the children to connect with nature in the course of their play
• the garden is designed to function as a sustainable ecology, and with an indigenous approach to seeing nature and connecting to the earth.
Our pilot Artgarden project at Murrarie State School has been a great success, and the school was keen to see it extended.
A design might include:
• trees planted or pruned to form or suggest cubbies or bowers
• vines to provide materials for weaving
• a hardened mound of earth for sculpting (eg. into a termite mound)
• low growing bushes or branches sculpted to form ‘nests’ into which children can place ‘treasures’
• bush tucker plants
• butterfly attracting plants
• a stingless native beehive.
Artgarden Children’s Workshops
Our artists, landscapers and ecologists are available to run creative workshops and ongoing support to:
• enhance the children’s use of the garden
• further their practical knowledge on nature, ecology and the environment
• teach skills on how they can use, care for, develop, and maintain the artgarden as a sustainable and valuable resource while making it more beautiful, and productive.
• provide additional sculptural or activity based, interactive art
• provide advice on suitable plants for bush tucker, insects and butterflies, moulding and shaping, and use in creative play
In an Artgarden, children learn to nurture and care for the plants they have developed an appreciation of through their play. They are introduced to the ‘slow’ pace of natural things – waiting for plants to grow, flower and fruit they learn that not everything is instantly available.

Art on the Carpet

Art on the carpet is ideal for schools, libraries, festivals, children’s centres and can be held just about anywhere. This program explores 3-dimensional assemblage using a variety of materials and resources. We love the imaginative ideas the children come up with on the magic carpet.
